How is Arena of Valor Different from King of Glory etc.?
The story of Arena of Valor betting begins in 2015. Chinese tech giant, Tencent Ltd., asked Riot Games to design a mobile version of their hugely popular esports title, League of Legends (LoL).
When Riot Games initially refused, multiple developers then began fierce competition. They wanted to create a smartphone-compatible MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game that could rival LoL’s runaway success.
After many battles for copyright and localisation rights, TiMi Studios – also part of Tencent – released King of Glory (Chinese: 王者荣耀 – Wángzhě Róngyào, also called Honor of Kings) in October 2015.
King of Glory grew so fast in popularity that it rivalled Vainglory as the most popular mobile MOBA in China. Naturally, this also made King of Glory a huge hit for esports betting in China, which is even more exciting now in 2025.
Tencent quickly realised the importance of presenting this game to the Western market, but it would require a serious makeover. To properly westernise the game, developers created new characters and atmospheres. These were inspired by European folklore and mythology, as well as DC superheroes, steampunk and even Lovecraftian horror!
Finally, they renamed the game Arena of Valor and released it to Europe and the Americas in 2017. So while Arena of Valor 2 and King of Glory/Honor of Kings play the same, they’re altogether separate esports, with their own communities, leagues and tournaments.

How to Play Arena of Valor
It’s true, MOBA esports are taking the world of professional video gaming by storm, and the highly competitive nature of these team-based showdowns is legendary. MOBAs and battle royale esports have played a huge part in creating a global gaming industry with nearly 500 million fans in 2021.
Dota 2 and League of Legends, both MOBAs, are two of the “Top 3” esports of 2025. CS:GO, a first-person shooter, is the third. Then, you’ve got Smite, another MOBA with mythology themes, as well as Heroes of the Storm and others.
Despite such variety, AoV betting is very simple, since all Multiplayer Online Battle Arena games currently follow a similar game mechanic.
Basically, it’s a 3v3 or 5v5 team competition with one objective: destroy the other team’s base/core/crystal. Arena of Valor follows this format – in fact, their motto is “join as five, battle as one”.
There are many different game modes for Arena of Valor 2. The most common is known as Grand Battle or simply Ranked Match, and it takes place on the Antaris Battlefield. Two teams of five players battle it out, killing heroes and securing objectives. The main goal is to destroy the other team’s crystal, which wins the match.
At the time of writing, Arena of Valor offers 108 heroes for you to choose from, with each offering unique equipment and abilities. Heroes belong to one of six “classes”, with the most important difference being the type of damage it deals (Physical or Magic).
Arena of Valor Hero Classes
Here’s a quick guide to hero classes, which is vital information for AoV2 esports betting.
Hero Class | Overview | Examples |
---|---|---|
Warrior | All-rounder characters, with a balanced amount of health, attack and defense. Best for sustained fighting while other team members provide support. | Kil’Groth, Florentino and Wonder Woman |
Mage | Heroes that deal magic damage, usually in extremely powerful bursts. Depending on abilities and equipment, they can be fragile or durable, long-distance or melee fighters. | Jinnar, The Flash and Lauriel |
Assassin | These heroes are highly mobile and deal lots of damage. They are best for taking out valuable targets, like marksmen, mages or other assassins. Generally quite fragile, they won’t survive intense combat. | Batman, Zill and Butterfly |
Tank | Like the name suggests, Tanks are designed to take a lot of damage and protect the rest of the team. Generally defensive, they’re best for drawing enemy fire and controlling ground. | Toro, Y’bneth and Omega |
Marksman | Ranged heroes useful for dealing sustained, long-distance damage to enemy characters and/or turrets. However, these saboteurs are very vulnerable and should stay out of melee battles. | Tel'Annas, The Joker and Wisp |
Support | These heroes support the rest of the team by healing them and applying buffs (i.e. damage resistance). They also negatively buff the enemy team (speed reduction/stunning). Not good in combat, but an essential part of effective team strategy. | Chaugnar, Alice and TeeMee |
Keep in mind, different heroes can belong to multiple classes and can also change strengths/weaknesses. This depends on items purchased or abilities activated.
As with all esports games, the best way to improve as an Arena of Valor player is to play the game itself. Similarly, you can become a better bettor through smart Arena of Valor betting. Keep reading to learn how!
Arena of Valor Esports Tournaments
Sometimes, you’ll have the opportunity to bet on small-time and local Arena of Valor competitions. But far and away the most common way to place your stake is on professional AoV esports tournaments.
As we mentioned earlier, Arena of Valor is one of the fastest-growing mobile esports of 2025. So it’s no surprise that their pro tournaments keep growing in size from year to year. In terms of esports earnings, the Arena of Valor World Cup 2021 offers a prize pool of $500,000. This money is then divided between the top eight teams.
The Arena of Valor International Championship is the second of two international AoV esports competitions. While cancelled due to the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, we expect AIC to make a full recovery in 2025.
In order to get to the world stage, aspiring AoV teams must first claim victory in their regional leagues. Most of these take place in esports countries located in East and Southeast Asia.
Such leagues hosting AoV tournaments include the Garena Challenger Series (Taipei), the Arena of Japan’s Toryumon Cup and AoV Star League (Indonesia), among others.
We expect professional Arena of Valor competition to hit Western markets such as Europe and the Americas very soon. Stay tuned with our esports betting tips and predictions!
